What is the Clarence DI Program?
Goals and Objectives of the Program
What do Clarence DI teams do?
Each year teams of two to seven members select one of five competitive Challenges. With the
guidance – but not help – of a Team Manager (who serves as facilitator, not coach), the team
creates an action plan and works together to create everything needed for their Presentation.
Teams begin work at weekly meetings in the fall, then meet for ten to twelve weeks to create
their unique solution to their Challenge, which can have a focus that is theatrical, structural,
improvisational, scientific or technical - or a blend of several disciplines. Teams present their
solutions at the Western NY Regional competition in mid-March. The top two teams from the
region advance to NY State Championships in April, and from there the top teams advance to
DI Globals.
What does that accomplish?
The goals of the Clarence DI Program are to:
- Foster creative and critical thinking
- Learn and apply Creative Problem Solving method and tools
- Develop teamwork, collaboration, and leadership skills
- Nurture research and inquiry skills, involving both creative exploration and attention to
detail
- Enhance and apply written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- (both impromptu and sustained)
- Promote the recognition, use, and development of many and varied strengths and
talents
Why do DI?
Participants learn unique and critical life skills including teamwork, critical and creative
thinking, project management, resource management, mutual respect, research and
presentation skills and, as all challenges must be strictly team-solved, self-reliance. These
skills make Destination ImagiNation participants more valuable to their communities and as
future employees.

About Global Finals
Global Finals is a culmination of the creativity competition year. It brings team winners
representing their state, their province, or their country to compete together at the annual
international creative problem solving tournament held in May of each year at the University of
Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. Destination ImagiNation Global Finals is, simply put, the largest
creativity competition of its kind held anywhere. It creates a place where creativity is not only
accepted, it is expected and celebrated. Teams from around the world, although competing,
bond and create lifelong friendships in the Spirit of DI™. More: Global Finals
